National Screening Unit resources

Learning Media has a trusted relationship with the National Screening Unit (NSU), a unit in the Ministry of Health that is responsible for the safety, effectiveness, and quality of organised screening programmes in New Zealand. We edit and design many of its resources, including booklets, pamphlets, and posters.

The NSU asked us to come up with a design layout and colour palette that could be applied to all their antenatal and newborn screening resources, including screening the hearing of newborn children as well as antenatal screening for Down syndrome and HIV. We also supplied editing services for the hearing and Down syndrome resources.

For the four hearing screening resources, we co-ordinated a photo shoot at a hospital to show the screening procedure and the placement of hearing devices on babies. To ensure these resources would speak to their audience, we arranged pre-testing and incorporated the feedback into our editing and design.

We came up with a fresh layout for the hearing screening resources. We used a muted colour palette and a swirling motif – a simple but striking design that became part of a family of design features for the NSU. We carried these features through to our redesign of the resource for antenatal HIV screening (two pamphlets on HIV testing and prevention) and in the set of three pamphlets on testing for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions.

Currently, we are editing and designing a pamphlet that supports new-born metabolic screening (the heel-prick blood test).
