Ka taea tō tamaiti te rongo? Can your child hear?

Poster

This bilingual Ministry of Health poster encourages families and whānau to have their children’s hearing checked. We made links with other health campaigns and drew on our existing networks to design this poster in a short time frame.

The brief

To evaluate the effectiveness of a poster that encourages families and whānau to have their children’s hearing checked and to redesign and develop the poster, ensuring that it is engaging from a design, text, and health literacy perspective.

Our solution

Can your child hear? posterThe Ministry of Health directed Learning Media to broaden the emphasis of the poster, which previously focused on how hearing loss, due to glue ear, prevented children from joining in and listening to stories. The revised poster emphasises activities that children can do when they hear well, such as reading aloud and listening to music.

We selected a project team that has experience working with te reo and health resources. The designer chose strong, warm colours to project a positive message, reinforced by photos of young children interacting with one another and adults.

The design and development of this poster is part of a larger contract with the Ministry of Health for managing the national health education materials. Through this contract, we supply more than 400 public health booklets, pamphlets, posters, and stickers. The contract also includes content management of an online catalogue. Most of the resources can be viewed online as PDFs, and print copies can be ordered.
