The art work of Graham Percy is on display in an exhibition at the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui between 19 November 2011 and 29 January 2012.

Graham was born in Taranaki in 1938 and studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London and left New Zealand in the early 196os. He began to contribute drawings for the School Journal and this continued into the 1970s. He became a noted illustrator of children’s books, as well as a designer of all kinds of diverse publications such as posters, record covers, Christmas cards, and postage stamps.

Graham was also a serious artist, and although he lived most of his life in London, he always thought of himself as a New Zealander. Many of his drawings include at least one kiwi, often in strange and unusual settings. It shows how the kiwi may be flightless, but it does get around. His drawings often show a sense of fun and playfulness.

The idea of the micronaut was thought of by Gregory O’Brien, who wrote the recently published book A Micronaut in the Wide World: The Imaginative Life and Times of Graham Percy and also curated the exhibition. A micronaut is someone who looks very closely at the tiny things around them. Graham Percy also looked at the wide world for his inspiration.

For more information about the exhibition, visit the Sarjeant Gallery's website.
